The St. Mary Levee District held a groundbreaking Friday for the Franklin Canal Flood Protection System at the Bayou Yokely Enlargement Pumping Station. Local and state officials as well as members of the Levee Board, representatives from Shaw Coastal Group and contractors were on hand for the occasion. Some $4.635 million in funds for the project were acquired by state Rep. Sam Jones and another $640,000 in funds were acquired by Franklin Mayor Raymond Harris. A swing-gate barge, pictured below, will be installed. The project is anticipated to provide flood protection for the next hurricane season.
