A body found in a cane field on La. 317 near Centerville has been identified as that of a Bayou Vista man reported missing in early November.

The body has been identified as that of Mark James Berthelot, 38, who had been reported missing on Nov. 10.

Sheriff Mark A. Hebert said the sheriff’s department was contacted Nov. 18 just before noon when a local farmer located possible human remains in the field.

Hebert said that upon deputies’ arrival they were unable to identify the individual and the St. Mary Parish Corner’s Office was contacted and an investigation begun.

During the process to identify the body, the coroner’s office contacted the Louisiana State University Faces Laboratory to assist in the identification process.

Berthelot had last been seen Oct. 3 by his family.

Hebert said the case is being investigated as a homicide
