President Joyce Champagne opened the meeting. Floyd LeBlanc said the prayer and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary EmmaDel Broussard read the minutes from the July meeting and Treasurer Floyd LeBlanc gave the treasury report.
A moment of silence was observed for recently deceased long time member of the club, Mrs. Marion Melancon.
Linda Darce was honored as this year’s recipient of the “Member of the Year” award of the Franklin Golden Age Club. The recipient is chosen by secret ballot of club members. Club President Joyce Champagne presented Linda with a plaque from the club. Linda was married to the late Tommy Darce of Baldwin. She and Tommy are the parents of three daughters, Chantelle Landry, Monique Waites, and Malena Garrett. Linda is also grandmother to eight grandchildren. Linda was 2008 Franklin Golden Age Queen and also AARP Mardi Gras Queen for 2011.
The Lafayette Golden Age Club will hold their coronation ball on Saturday, September 24 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom on McKinley Street. Anyone needing more information may contact Joyce at home.
Club President Joyce Champagne reminded members participating in secret pals to remember their secret pals throughout the year on special occasions.
Plans are underway for the club’s fundraiser to be held Saturday, October 8 and will be finalized at the September meeting.
A note was received from Beverly Domengeaux with St. Mary Council on Aging that a commemoration of 911 would be held Sunday, September 11 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center along with the 34th anniversary celebration of St. Mary Council on Aging.
Celebrating a birthday in August is Myrtle Boudreaux.
The Annual Memorial Service for recently deceased members of the club will be held at the September 20 meeting and will include a covered dish meal.
