Bayou Vista Garden Club members brought containers and foliage for a demonstration on foliage-only designs given by guest speaker Jean Gilstrap. Participants were, from left, Gloria Roy (seated), Dawn Thomason, Nancy Marcel, Donna Bucci, Kim Alcina, Pam Breaux, Shannon Breaux, Janice Verret, Ann Breaux, Jo Ann Ryan and Marge Williams (seated).
Her demonstration showed how to make foliage-only designs. BVGC members brought containers from home and foliage from their gardens that they used as design elements with the help of Gilstrap.
Club Horticulture Chairman Pam Breaux presented Rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) as the horticulture exhibit. She explained that the evergreen perennial shrub has Mediterranean origins. According to Breaux, it is often used as a decorative plant and has many culinary and medicinal uses. She also distributed handouts which included sun and soil requirements, pruning technique, and propagating guidelines.
Hostesses for the meeting were Jo Ann Ryan, Ann Breaux and Mary Myers. Ryan created the Pot-et-Fleurs floral design, Count Your Blessings. This type of design combines two or more soil-growing plants with cut plant materials artistically arranged together in a suitable container. Plants included were viola, snapdragon, ornamental pepper, cordyline, schefflera, cardinal flower and various ferns.
Door prize winner was Donna Bucci.
