Hamlin stated Melancon’s visit to Ville Platte High School was unplanned, but that Melancon was very pleased with the progress the school district has made in regards to renovating the campus. Hamlin said he spent several hours at the school and meeting with her. He also spoke with students and teachers during his visit.
“He had very nice things to say,” Hamlin said. “It was a very positive response from him.”
Hamlin also added a hearing has been scheduled for May 16, in which the fate of the school district’s unitary status will be decided.
In total, Hamlin said the district has spent $3.3 million renovating the campus at Ville Platte High School and she complimented the board members for their work in this case over the years.
“This is wonderful news for the Evangeline Parish school system,” she said.
More good news was also given by Business Manager Amy Lafleur, who stated tax collections for the month of November were up by $68,019.24 over the same month last year. In addition, the district has gotten $36,257.35 more in tax collections than last year through the month of Novmeber.
In other business, the board:
•Approved a contract with American Academy, who will be tasked with offering an online course for students who dropped out of the Evangeline Parish school system. Personnel and Secondary Supervisor Mike Lombas said the approval was contingent on the approval of legal counsel. He stated attorneys for both parties are working to ensure the contract meets all legal requirements before signing.
•Learned Evangeline Parish is high above the state average when it comes to highly-qualified teachers. Hamlin stated this parish has 90.2 percent highly-qualified teachers compared to the state average of 68.7 percent. Lombas stated that number could increase to 92 percent in the near future.
