PATTERSON — Patterson’s defense was better but its bats were mostly quiet in a 5-1 loss to Loreauville Tuesday.

While the Lumberjacks committed just one error after committing 20 in three games this past weekend, its offense managed just one hit off Loreauville pitcher Evan Hebert, a signee with the University of Arizona, college baseball’s defending national champion.

In the complete game victory, Hebert surrendered an earned run on a hit with two walks and 13 strikeouts.

He was able to overcome five errors by the Tigers’ defense.

“You have to credit their pitcher for really controlling the game,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said. “It’s not often that high school hitters face someone throwing 86-88 mph from the left side. I thought early on we had some decent at-bats against him and had a chance in the first inning to do some damage, but he did a good job maneuvering through some miscues.”

While Patterson couldn’t get much offensive production, things started out solid for the squad as Dallas Hamlett homered off Hebert for a 1-0 Patterson advantage in the top of the first inning.

The lead stood until the top of the fourth when Loreauville plated three runs for a 3-1 advantage. The Tigers added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Patterson’s Deondre Skinner suffered the loss. In four innings of work, he surrendered three runs — all earned — on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.

However, Patterson pitching combined for eight walks.

“I was pleased with the way we played defense today,” Jensen said. “That was a big change from the weekend. We just threw too many balls tonight. We gave them too many free passes at the plate, and they manufactured some runs.

Hamlett led the ‘Jacks with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI and a run.

The Lumberjacks (2-8) will return to action Thursday at 4 p.m. when they play South Lafourche at Thibodaux High School in the Thibodaux High/E.D. White Tournament.

“There is no doubt we played better,” Jensen said of Tuesday’s performance, “and I’m looking forward to seeing if we can keep moving forward in our games this weekend.”

Ridgewood

Charlie Barron tossed a one-hitter and Barron Courtney homered and drove in five as the Central Catholic Eagles rolled past Ridgewood, 12-0, in five innings Tuesday in Amelia.

In the complete-game victory, Barron surrendered a single.

At the plate, Courtney finished 3-for-3 with a run. He also added a double.

The Eagles scored all of their runs in the first two innings, including an eight-run first.

Other top Central Catholic contributors included Justin Arceneaux, 2-for-2, a double, two RBIs and two runs; Josh Singleton, 2-for-3, a double, an RBI and a run; Bryson Barbier, 1-for-2, an RBI and two runs; Austin Autin, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Matthew Barbier and Tony Pennison, each 1-for-1 with a double; and Samuel Guarisco, an RBI.

Central Catholic will return to action Thursday when it faces Thibodaux High at 3:30 p.m. at Thibodaux High in its opening game of the Thibodaux High/E.D. White Tournament.

Berwick falls

to St. Amant

Berwick fell on the road to Class 5A St. Amant, 8-2, Tuesday.

St. Amant jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, and while the Panthers responded with two runs in the top of the fourth, the homestanding squad plated four more in the bottom of the sixth.

St. Amant was able to overcome four errors for the win.

Any chance Berwick had of producing a big inning was stifled as the squad hit into three double plays.

Nick Duthu was saddled with the loss as he surrendered four runs — all earned — on six hits with one walk, one hit batter and one strikeout in 3.2 innings.

Berwick was limited to five hits — all singles in the loss.

Brooks Richard led the squad with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Ian Bergeron finished 1-for-2 with a run; Neal Theriot and Logan Theriot each finished 1-for-3 with a run; and Anthony Richard, 1-for-4.

While the Panthers did lose Tuesday, they did pick up a win a day earlier as the Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced Monday that Central Lafourche had to forfeit its 10-3 victory against Berwick at Morgan City’s A&E Basin Bengal Classic on Feb. 24.

The forfeit was one of three for Central Lafourche as it used one ineligible player in five games, while two others participated in eight games. Central Lafourche won three of those contests.

The violations were self-reported and the school was fined $600.

The program also is on probation for a year and coach Scott Duplantis will be required to participate in an LHSAA rules course.

With the changes, Berwick’s record now stands at 8-4 overall.

The squad will return to action Saturday when it participates in St. Michael the Archangel's tournament. Berwick will play St. Michael the Archangel at 12:30 p.m. and Broadmoor at 3 p.m.
