ZACHARY – The Army JROTC instructor at Northeast High School died Nov. 17 when he fell from a rappelling wall at Camp Avondale in Clinton, accordign to the East Feliciana Sheriff’s Office.

Retired Army Maj. Francis J. Toomey II, 48, of Geismar, and a student went to Avondale Scout Reservation east of Clinton to check out a rappelling wall for an ROTC exercise Toomey had planned for Nov. 18, said Detective Don McKey of the EFSO.

McKey said Toomey hooked a rappelling rope to an object on top of the wall, and began rappelling down, but the rope became unhooked, causing him to fall about 30 feet.

Toomey was pronounced dead by East Feliciana Coronor Michael DeJohn, who has ordered an autopsy, McKey said.
