Signs like this one on La. 182 in Berwick designating the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area began popping up in the area last week. According to the website, the area was established in 2006 and is part of the National Park Service. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area stretches across 14 parishes in south-central Louisiana. Our area belongs to the designated Coastal Zone, which includes St. Mary, Assumption and Terrebonne parishes. To learn more, visit the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area website, http://www.atchafalaya.org.
