LAFAYETTE – Authorities hope for the best but many expect the worst as the search for Mickey Shunick continues.

The missing ULL coed’s bike was found Sunday near the Whiskey Bay bridge in the Atchafalaya River Basin about 30 miles east of the last place she was reported seen.

The petite blonde was riding her bike home about 2 a.m. on May 19 when she disappeared. A reward total more than $20,000 has failed to turn any evidence indication where she might now be.

Police said they are considering similarities between Shunick’s vanishing and such cases in other states, but have come to no linking conclusions.

The Whiskey Bay bridge is a familiar sight to regular and occasional travelers of I10. It rises out of the flat swamp-forest around it to a height sufficient to allow industrial boat traffic under it.

With the search ending at noon Monday at the Whiskey Bay site where the bike was recovered, authorities said they also are checking similar cases in other states for possible connections.

Fishermen came upon Shunick’s bicycle in a pile of trash under the bridge and called authorities.

An extensive search apparently failed to turn up any clues before it was called off Monday
