At about 4 p.m. Sunday, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol division, along with Bayou Cane Fire Department personnel, responded to a complaint about a possible chemical spill. When they arrived, investigators learned that a man intentionally ignited a container inside the store causing a chemical reaction, Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said.
The chemical reaction forced a thick cloud of smoke into the air, and the store was immediately evacuated. No one was injured during the incident, Larpenter said.
The contents of the container included chlorine. Additional scientific testing will be conducted to determine the specific chemical make-up of the mixture, he added.
Police are looking for a white male, about 30-years-old, who has a muscular build and reddish hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing tan shorts and a blue T-shirt.
Anyone with information concerning the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Department at 985-876-2500.
