A Texas High school quarterback with multiple relatives in the Tri-City area was named the U.S. Air Force Week 2 Player of the Week earlier this season and had the Air Assault Play of the Week from the same game.
McAllen Bulldogs’ sophomore Fred Hover was given the player of the week award after finishing the contest against rival Nikki Rowe with 307 total yards and four scores. He passed for three scores and rushed for another in the 40-21 victory.
One of those touchdowns, a completion to Phillip Cantu, earned the Air Assault Play of the Week. After Cantu caught a short Hover pass around the Nikki Rowe 10-yard line, he headed for the end zone, diving in when he neared the goal line.
Hover’s rushing touchdown came on the first offensive play of the third quarter when he slipped at least three tackles en route to the end zone.
Hover is the grandson of Edie Hover, Don Hover and Patsy Mann, all of Morgan City, and the late Freddie Mann. He has multiple aunts and uncles who live in the Tri-City area, while his cousin is former LSU baseball player Grant Dozar.
