Bussey, a 2,600-acre reservoir, was created in the 1950s by IP to serve as an alternate water source for its now-closed Bastrop mill.
The reservoir quickly became a hot spot for largemouth bass anglers and yielded fish of then-rare weights.
As it aged, the brake fell on hard times. But LDWF has plans to revitalize it.
The state will drain and dry the brake, remove the current fish population and restock it with bass, bream, crappie and catfish.
The project is expected to take up to five years to complete.
Wham Brake was also built in the 1950s on IP land as a project with the US Army Corps of Engineers. It will become part of the 22,000-acre Russell-Sage Wildlife Management Area.
