Lets just say he’s been turned into a primate speed bump, never to be heard from again.
In the spirit of K.G., I would like to take a shot at a team from last week — Crowley.
They did all they could to duck Patterson.
They didn’t want to make the trip in the rain. When Patterson offered to load up and come to their place, they didn’t want any part of that either. All of this while every other game scheduled in the Lafayette area and in St. Mary Parish was played.
I knew the Lumberjacks were good coming into this season, but I didn’t think they were so good that teams were scared to step on the field with them.
There won’t be any ducking the ‘Jacks this week with Class 5A Central Lafourche likely thinking it can teach the Class 3A powerhouse a thing or two.
We’ll see how that works out.
Elsewhere, this week is full of interesting games.
If I had to pick one that’s a must-see, it would be Friday’s game between White Castle and Central Catholic at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City.
The Eagles are No. 9 in the LSWA Class 1A poll and the defending state champion Bulldogs are No. 1.
David Furher’s team will get a nice test after a gutsy win last week in Loreauville.
If CCHS pulls off the upset this week, look for them to shoot up the polls and into the top five.
Across the Atchafalaya River, Morgan City will take on Berwick in a rematch of the game that the Panthers won last season due to a late fumble by the Tigers.
Both teams are in a rebuilding-mode, but MCHS is a year ahead with coach Brandon Nowlin in his second season in charge, while Craig Brodie is in his first season with Berwick.
They both have vast knowledge of the game to share with their teams and it’s just a matter of time before they have suc-cess.
Both have brought a refreshing approach and each squad looks much different than they did before new leadership was put in place.
In Berwick’s case, Brodie isn’t shy about speaking his mind.
Leading up to the season opener last week he expressed his displeasure with the jamboree results against Central Catholic.
Brodie didn’t like that the Eagles posted 40-plus points and felt like the score was run up a bit.
I don’t agree with him in this case, but if that’s how he feels about it — I respect that. Speaking up in a small community can lead to some awkward moments with those that disagree with you, I know from experience, so it’s nice to see a coach that isn’t bothered by that and calls things the way he sees it.
It’s a trait sorely lacking these days.
On the west end of the parish, West St. Mary shutout rival Franklin and looked like a team that could live up to the preseason hype.
This week’s trip to face Northwest should tell us a lot about what kind of Wolfpack team Ryan Antoine has there in Baldwin.
Franklin is at home this week against St. Martinville and I expect an inspired performance from J Ina’s squad. He doesn’t strike me as the type of coach that goes easy on his team in practice after a shutout.
That brings us to Hanson Memorial. The Tigers won last week on a late touchdown and will have their hands full on the road against Catholic Pointe Coupee. Don’t be surprised if the experienced HMS squad comes away with another victory.
Yeah that's exactly what Central Lafourche is thinking. I thought the sports writers from our area were bad but you sir are an idiot! We are coming off a 2-8 Season, we have a first year head coach, and we just got destroyed by Ponchatoula we're not taking anything for granted and counting our chickens before their hatched based on what class a team is in. We will not be ducking though, you have that right.
