BATON ROUGE ‑ Jeffery Lee Guillory, suspected of killing several women, got a life sentence Wednesday for strangling a woman her in 2002.

The state tied Guillory to the death of Renee Newman using DNA found under her fingernails, the result, prosectors argued, of her trying to fend off her attacker.

The DNA searches that eventually turned up Guillory also developed information that led to arrests in several cold cases in South Louisiana.

Guillory was convicted of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

He was already serving time for an attempted murder.
