CROWLEY - Rosemarie Harmon, 61 of Kenner, was traveling with her three aging pets - two dogs and one cat -when she was involved in a car wreck which resulted in her vehicle being impounded, her being arrested and her animals being taken to the Crowley Animal Shelter.

When released, she went looking for her animals.

When she arrived at the “tin building with no air conditioners or fans,” that’s when she began to get a bad feeling.

“A man named Aaron unlocked the shed and took me down a dark, dirty narrow aisle and opened up an eye-level cage,” said Harmon. “Inside was my 12-year-old cat, ‘Girlfriend’, and she was so traumatized that she didn’t even recognize me.”

“Anyone who says that cats don’t change their expression is wrong,” she added. “My little kitty wore the face of despair as though she was waiting to die.”

“Then we turned to the dog cages and my heart was truly broken,” said Harmon. “My aging dog ‘Bambi’ and my lab mix Mollie were crushed in a small pen with two other dogs.”

According to Harmon, both dogs were covered in urine and feces with Mollie getting the worst of it with feces in her ear and matted on her coat.

To add insult to injury, the worker told Harmon that she would have to pay $225 for “sheltering” her animals for five days. Harmon only had $60 which she claims he begrudgingly accepted and put into his pocket without providing a receipt.

Crowley Mayor Greg Jones said he felt compassion for Harmon but disputed the fact that the shelter was without fans.

“As far as her charge of a city employee pocketing any money it will be looked into and we will properly handle the situation,” said Mayor Jones.

“Look, I realize that our shelter does need some work, but as most people know we are presently dealing with budget issues which make spending money on improvements very tough. We will look into the conditions of the shelter and its employees and see what we can do to improve the conditions as soon as we are able.”

The city went through protracted budget debate this summer. Its financial report lists several million dollars in reserve balance.

NO Mayor Jones it is not fine...it needs to be made animal friendly and a safe place for unwanted furry friends to be housed and kept warm and fed til a forever home can be found...Im so glad you are not my Mayor because i think this would be your last term.

Before all of you post your comments about the Crowley shelter, I think you might want to go down there and have a look for yourselves. I do not have a "dog in this fight", but unless things have changed drasticaly in the last month, this woman is not being truthful. Just look at the facts of the story, first of all, the woman in question was arrested in crowley. I had a service call at the shelter a few weeks ago, and the first thing I told my wife when I got home was, "you should see how well they treat the animals at the shelter." There were a total of 3 very large fans blowing on the animals in the shelter. The cages were all very large and roomy. There were only 2 cages with more than one animal, and the cage was more than big enough for the two animals inside. When the shelter worker came into the cage area, the animals all started wagging their tails, jumping on the doors, and were apparently glad to see the worker. So, before you all start bashing the Crowley shelter, consider the source.

I'm sorry but maybe you may be confused... There are two shelters in Crowley, the Parish Shelter and the City Shelter. The City Shelter is the one with the problem. I can't say how credible this woman's story is but the animals definitely aren't being treated the best over there. Did you see the new this past week?? I believe it aired Monday, Dec. 5th about the animals being pulled from there because of malnutrition. There are pictures to prove it not only of "Duke" the dog the was shown on the news but as well as others that have been taken. I'm sorry but the pictures don't lie. Do you know how long a dog has to go without food in order to get to the point that these dogs are at?? They are literally skin and bones... and maybe they feed them a little or occasionally but definitely not the way they should. You can go to Second Chance Paws and Angels 4 Paws on Facebook and see for yourself the condition of the dog and make your own decision from there. Angels 4 Paws has an album named City Shelter and Second Chance Paws has the pictures of Duke and once you see these pictures there is no way you can say that the City Shelter is doing what they are suppose to do or treating these animals correctly.

This a horrible story, This shelter needs to be shut down and arrests need to be made. money or no money makes no differences when it comes to a clean kennel to lay in , and a slight breeze from a fan. and a pan of cool water to drink, if there is NO money for this so called shelter, CLOSE IT DOWN....Call the nearest SPCA and bring the animals there...And please everyone ...support any local shelter in any way you can, a simple cake bake sale can fetch a nice $ 500.00 to $ 800.00 profit. once a month. And many of the dog food companies will donate hundreds of pounds of food to a non profit shelter, most local water company's will wave water bills for a non profit shelter, also if you ask many electric co. will make a donation every year and when all of it is applied to the eclectic usage, in most cases it covers most if not all of the eclectic bill as long as the shelter practice's to conserve electricity. Get local businesses involved, ask for HELP, give business a nice sticker to post on there front doors letting everyone know they support there local shelter, put jars for collection of coins at all business. Do fund raises for a spay an neutering program work that out with the local vets. Have monthly adoption days in front of the local feed stores.I know I'm making all this sound easy and I'm here to tell you it's NOT easy, it is hard work, But I feel everything you put into it will pay off so much to every Lil scared animal that comes thew the door...Get your Kids excited about helping, and every morning when you wake up just thank the Lord Jesus for the strength to help you ...And remember SPAY OR NURTURER all your pets and do not buy a dog...adopt...

This horrid death trap of a shelter needs to be closed immediately! What are the politicians in this "town" of Crowley doing? Why aren't they taking action except to deny allegations? The attorney Generals office and Governor need to investigate and shut this shelter down NOW!!
