The Morgan City Lady Tigers went 3-0 in the St. Amant Tournament this weekend with wins against Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (6-1), Destrehan (7-1) and Central Lafourche (10-6).

MCHS coach Kelly Jo Aucoin said the weekend was a good one with district play looming.

“We went up against some good pitching and were able to produce the runs,” Aucoin said. “Our defense was solid and was playing a good game behind our pitching. We also had some of our young players step it up at the bats. They showed what they where capable of doing. I am very proud of the team for what they are accomplishing. They are working more and more together, and it is showing.”

Against Sacred Heart, Amber Bailey led the Lady Tigers with a 1-for-2 performance with two runs, two walks and an RBI; Shannon Theriot added a 1-for-3 performance with a run, an RBI and a walk; and Reina Fernandez finished 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and a triple.

Other MCHS offensive leaders included Marilynn Bailey, 2-for-4 with a double; Brandi Ingram, 2-for-4 with a stolen base; Katelyn Adams, 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Nikki Pennison, 1-for-3 with a run; and Aliya Green, hit by a pitch and a sacrifice.

On the mound, Tyler Hebert recorded three strikeouts and surrendered two walks.

Against Destrehan, Ingram and Green each went 1-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a home run.

Other MCHS hitters included Theriot, 1-for-3 with a double, one run and two RBI; A. Bailey and M. Bailey, each 1-for-3 with a run and a double; Pennison, 1-for-2; and Fernandez, 1-for-3.

Hebert recorded two strikeouts on the mound.

Against Central Lafourche, A. Bailey led MCHS with a 4-for-5 performance with two runs, three RBI, a double and a triple.

Other MCHS standouts included Theriot, 2-for-4 with an RBI; Ingram, 2-for-3 with a run and a walk; Adams, 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI; M. Bailey, one run and an RBI; and Fernandez and Pennison, each with a run and a walk.

Hebert recorded two strikeouts and surrendered two walks.

MCHS (6-4) will return to action Tuesday when they travel to the Bayou Vista Community Center to face nearby rival Central Catholic at 4 p.m.

Lady Panthers winless

in their tournament

The Berwick Lady Panthers finished 0-3 in the Berwick Lady Panther Classic this weekend but fared well against some of the state’s toughest softball competition.

The Lady Panthers lost 6-5 to last year’s Class 4A runner-up, Teurlings Catholic; lost 6-0 to 2011 Class 4A semifinalist Vandebilt Catholic; and fell 4-2 to defending Class 3A state champion Catholic High-New Iberia (who has moved down to Class 2A).

“We actually had opportunities against Teurlings and Catholic High to win both games in the bottom of the seventh but just couldn’t get the timely hit,” BHS coach Lloyd Burchfield said. “But the experience of being in that situation has to help and maybe it will be a different story the next time those opportunities occur.”

Against Teurlings, the Lady Panthers rallied from a 6-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh but could not complete the comeback.

In the loss, Berwick committed five errors.

Megan Fegenbush took the loss for Berwick, surrendering six runs on nine hits with a walk while recording a strikeout.

At the plate, Abigail Ohlin led the Lady Panthers with a 2–for-4 performance with two runs, while Courtney Henry was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Other BHS offensive contributors included Amber Girard, 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Elizabeth Hover, 1-for-4 with a run; Fegenbush, 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Megan Fabre and Maddie Gray, each 1-for-3.

On Saturday against Vandebilt Catholic, the Lady Terriers broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning.

In the loss, the Lady Panthers again committed five errors.

Shelby Bergeron (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Berwick. In five innings, she surrendered six runs on nine hits with one walk.

At the plate, Henry and Haley Girard led Berwick with 2-for-3 performances apiece, while Ohlin was 2-for-4, Fabre was 1-for-3 and Hover was 1-for-4.

In its third game, Berwick and Catholic High were tied at one in the top of the fourth, but the visitors plated two runs in the inning for a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Panthers added a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2, but CHNI extended its lead with a run in the top of the seventh, and Berwick couldn’t respond at its last at-bat.

Fegenbush (3-5) pitched a complete game and surrendered four runs on four hits with two walks, while she struck out five.

“Megan continues to pitch well enough for us to win,” Burchfield said.

At the plate, Hover and Henry each went 2-for-4, Ohlin finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and Fabre finished 1-for-3 with a run.

Burchfield thanked all the sponsors for helping make the tournament a success.

The Lady Panthers (4-6) will open District 9-3A play Tuesday when they travel to face Erath in a 5 p.m. matchup.

Lady Eagles go 1-2

this weekend

The Central Catholic Lady Eagles went 1-2 this weekend in the Assumption Tournament.

After dominating South Lafourche, 10-0, on Friday, the Lady Eagles dropped two straight on Saturday to H.L. Bourgeois (8-7) and Assumption (10-0).

In Friday’s victory, the Lady Eagles completed all of its scoring in the first two innings.

On the mound, Megan Landry tossed a one-hitter in the five-inning contest, striking out nine.

“Megan pitched a great game, and her defense played well behind her,” CCHS coach Joe Russo said.

Hailee Thomas led CCHS at the plate with two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Other CCHS offensive contributors included Landry, two hits, one run and an RBI; Brittany Longman, one hit, one RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Kimberly Russo, one hit, one run and four stolen bases; Abbie Bergeron, one hit, two runs and two stolen bases; Amanda Barron, a double and an RBI; Celine Flores, an RBI; and Caroline Byrne, two runs.

On Saturday against HLB, the Lady Eagles blew a 7-2 lead, allowing the Lady Braves to score six unanswered runs, including four in the bottom of the sixth.

Landry suffered the loss in relief, surrendering four runs (three earned), on four hits and fanning two.

Longman pitched the first five innings for CCHS and surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

At the plate, Thomas again led the Lady Eagles’ offense with two doubles, two RBI and a run.

Other CCHS offensive contributors included Bergeron, two singles, two RBI, two stolen bases and a run; Flores, two singles, two stolen bases, an RBI and a run; Barron, a single and an RBI; Russo, a single, a run and a stolen base; Byrne, a single and a run; Olivia Crawford, two singles; and Landry, a stolen base and a run.

In their final weekend contest, Assumption defeated the Lady Eagles, 10-0, in five innings.

Assumption scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added four apiece in the third and fifth innings.

Landry (4-3) took the loss for the Lady Eagles (5-5). In five innings, she surrendered 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits with one walk. She also fanned seven.

Byrne led the Lady Eagles at the plate with a triple, while Longman, Thomas and Flores each recorded a hit.

Patterson opens district

The Patterson Lumberjills (1-6), who had the weekend off, will return to action Tuesday when it opens District 9-3A play against North Vermilion. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
