The Morgan City High School softball team has dedicated its home softball doubleheader against Zachary on Saturday at Magee Park as its “Softball for Awareness” game, an event to promote breast cancer education, awareness and fundraising.

The games will be held at noon and 2 p.m., and activities are planned between each game.

Morgan City breast cancer survivor Paula Persilver will throw out the first pitch before the noon game.

The goal is for all proceeds from donations, pink T-shirt sales and game admissions to be used to benefit St. Mary Parish residents who suffer from this disease.

Those who wear the special pink T-shirts sold to commemorate the event will receive free admission to the games.

In 2010, MCHS collected more than $2,262.

While in the past the school has partnered with the bayou affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, this year, to ensure the funds help those cancer patients in St. Mary Parish, proceeds will be donated to the Sallie Astor Burdine Foundation, which partners with OncoLogics and Miles Perret Cancer Services. These are non-profit organizations that offer various services to local breast cancer patients. Services include gas cards for transportation to treatment sites, wigs, bras, prosthetics, nutritional supplements and medication cards. All proceeds will be designated for St. Mary Parish residents who receive services from these two organizations.

Those wishing to contribute to the fundraising efforts can do so by encouraging fellow employees to attend Saturday’s softball games.
