Many Franklin businesses boarded up windows Wednesday in anticipation tropical storm Isaac, which forecasters say may reach hurricane strength today. The storm continued a steady march toward the Louisiana coast this morning just west of New Orleans.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said visitation and other programs at the parish jail have been suspended Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sheriff’s office civil department locations in Franklin and Morgan City will also be closed Tuesday and Wednesday and the shooting range will not open for the rest of the week.
Hebert said patrols have been increased throughout the parish.
He said the sheriff’s department is prepared for the storm and as a member of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association is part of a network of state sheriff’s departments capable of providing aid and resources.

Work is continuing on the closure of the Franklin Canal and is expected to be complete later today, according to St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin. The Yellow Bayou closure is complete and Alice C Road is closed for the duration.
Naquin said sand for bagging is available at the Amelia and Four Corners fire stations and at the public works facilities at the Hanson Canal and in Franklin.
A determination on whether to open shelters was to be made after a 10 a.m. conference call with parish officials and the National Weather Service, he said. Food and bedding would not be available if the shelters at Franklin Recreation Center and Berwick Civic Center open.
