Morgan City’s Tyler Hebert fires a pitch during the Lady Tigers’ 9-0 season-opening win against Thibodaux Wednesday. Blowouts apparently were the theme Wednesday as two local high school softball squads recorded them in their season openers.
Morgan City shut out Thibodaux, 9-0, while Patterson run-ruled Central Lafourche, 12-2, in five innings.
In Morgan City’s win, Tyler Hebert tossed a two-hitter, striking out 12 and surrendering just one walk.
“She did a great job for us,” Morgan City softball coach Kelly Jo Aucoin said. “She took control of the game and did her job.”
Hebert also contributed at the plate as she finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Celeste Williams led Morgan City at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Other top contributors for Morgan City included Marilynn Bailey, 2-for-3, two runs and a stolen base; Katelyn Adams, 1-for-3, and a triple; and Aliya Green, an RBI, hit by a pitch, two runs and a stolen base.
“The team played very good today,” Aucoin said. “They are coming together as a team. This game was a big win for us for our season opener.”
Morgan City (1-0) will hit the road today for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Destrehan High School. Junior varsity will follow the varsity contest.
In Patterson, Lumberjills Rachel Easley and Madi Morris both had huge games to lead the squad’s rout.
Easley finished 3-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and four runs scored, while Morris batted 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs.
Other top Patterson hitters included Carli McIntyre, 3-for-3 with three runs scored; and Arianna Ross, two RBIs.
“I thought the top of the line-up did a great job getting on base and getting runs in,” first-year coach Colby Minton said. “Anytime your number one and number two hitters are on base eight times combined, you will give yourself a chance to be successful. Two, three and four in the order did a great job of getting runners in.”
Carissa Fontenot earned the complete game victory as she surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and five strike outs.
“Carissa Fontenot did a great job getting ahead of hitters early and moving the ball around the zone,” Minton said.
Minton said minus one error in the first inning, his team’s defense was solid.
Patterson (1-0) will return to action today when it travels to Ellender. Varsity action is set for a 4 p.m. start, with junior varsity to follow.
