EUNICE — A 34-year-old Eunice man remains in jail after his girlfriend told police he held her down and poured bleach on her face and other parts of her body.
Police said Chance Ceasar is being held on $11,500 bond after entering a not guilty plea Wednesday to one count each of second-degree domestic battery, domestic abuse battery with injuries and disturbing the peace.
Police say Ceasar had previously been in jail on an array of charges stemming from an incident in July when he allegedly threatened the same woman with a skillet.
Police say Ceasar was out of jail on bond when he was arrested Tuesday.
2 win $100K on scratch-off
BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Lottery’s MONOPOLY scratch-off game, which launched in February, has seen two people win its top prize of $100,000.
Lottery officials say Larry Reeves, of Baton Rouge, purchased his winning ticket from a Circle K in Baton Rouge, while Torrell Jasper, of Houma, bought his from Cajun Magic Truck Stop in Houma.
Reeves has not said how he plans to use his winnings, but Jasper says he plans to buy a new home. Jasper’s luck prompted his friend, Dontrell Williams, to give the game a try. When he did, he ended up winning $1,000 on a ticket purchased at Jubilee Exxon in Houma.
The game still has three top prizes remaining.
Rapides superintendent search down to 3 candidates
ALEXANDRIA — The race for Rapides schools superintendents narrowed to three finalists on Thursday.
A vote by the Rapides Parish School Board put Tony Authement of Houma and Rick Williams of McKinney, Texas, in the first two slots.
A tie left the third slot open to another vote. Karl Carpenter of Pineville and Maria Pitre-Martin of Holly Springs, N.C., were tied with four votes each.
A second round of voting went in favor of Carpenter, 5-4.
The finalists will have a second interview with the school board in executive session on April 4.
3rd suspect captured
in Addis murder case
PORT ALLEN — U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force members have captured the third man indicted in the 2010 “murder for hire” of Corey Kitts in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Knox was arrested Thursday in New Orleans. Investigators have not disclosed Knox’s alleged role in the slaying.
A grand jury on March 14 charged Knox, along with Karl Michael Howard and Monique O. Kitts with first-degree murder and criminal conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Howard surrendered to West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies Wednesday just hours after a judge denied bond for co-defendant Monique Kitts.
Prosecutors at Monique Kitts’ bond hearing said she hired Howard to kill her husband so she could cash in his life insurance policy.
Iberia levee proposal
on April 6 ballot
NEW IBERIA — A package of two tax proposals is up for a vote in Iberia Parish on April 6 to help pay for a 26-mile levee to hold back hurricane storm surges.
On the ballot are a 5-mill property tax and a half-cent sales tax, which together would generate about $7 million a year to help pay for a levee project estimated at $420 million.
Ronald Gonsoulin, chairman of the parish’s Levee, Hurricane and Conservation District, said several coastal restoration projects have been considered to rebuild the wetlands that can sap the strength of hurricanes, but those projects could be years in the making and protection is needed now.
He said the proposed levee project is the “quickest fix to protect the residents and economic value along the coast.”
Crash kills Thibodaux man
VACHERIE — State police are investigating a fatal crash in St. James Parish.
Troopers say a 24-year-old Thibodaux man was killed Thursday afternoon when his pickup crossed the center line of La. 20 near Vacherie and hit another pickup head-on.
Trooper Evan Harrell says Tommy Thibodaux, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. James Parish Coroner’s Office.
Gerald Torres, 61, of Vacherie, who was using his seat belt, was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans for treatment of moderate injuries.
Slidell woman arrested
for embezzling over $2M
SLIDELL — A 72-year-old Slidell woman has been accused of stealing more than $2 million from two women who she worked for as a personal assistant for the last 28 years.
Sgt. Sean Beavers, of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, says Janice Ricks Linam was booked March 14 on two counts of bank fraud. She was released after posting $500,000 bond. Information on whether she has an attorney was not immediately available.
Beavers said Thursday that the son of one of her employers contacted the sheriff’s office in December after discovering irregularities in his mother’s finances. Investigators found that Linam allegedly had been writing checks totaling more than $450,000 from her employers’ personal accounts.
The family later hired a forensic accountant, who uncovered an estimated $2.1 million in questionable transactions.
Outside firm: Outage due to device ‘misoperation’
NEW ORLEANS — An outside expert investigating the cause of a partial power outage during Super Bowl XLVII has confirmed that the failure occurred because of the “misoperation” of a relay device.
Utah-based forensic engineer John Palmer released his findings Thursday.
Entergy, the company that supplies electricity to the Superdome, and the stadium’s management company hired Palmer to perform an independent analysis of the Feb. 3 outage.
Entergy has said it believed the outage was caused by an electrical relay device it installed specially to prevent a power failure at the dome. Entery New Orleans President and CEO Charles Rice says the company is pleased that Palmer’s analysis confirmed the relay operated in an unpredictable manner.
The partial blackout delayed the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers for 34 minutes.
Authorities capture
triple-homicide suspect
LAKE CHARLES — Lake Charles police have captured one of the three men wanted in connection with Wednesday’s triple homicide.
Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Armonta Dquon Hadnot, 18, of Lake Charles, was taken into custody overnight. Two other unidentified people are also being sought in the deaths.
Police Chief Don Dixon said three victims were killed during a robbery.
Dixon identified the dead as Jeminskian J. Arvie, David Jermaine Galmore, 23, and Fitzgerald Tremayne Guillory, 20.
He said the men were playing dice, when they were robbed.
He said it is unknown whether the victims knew their attackers.
