A Morgan City man was killed Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 in which he was ejected from his vehicle.

Daniel Turpin, 46, was southbound in a 1995 Nissan sport utility vehicle when a tire on his vehicle failed, causing him to run off the right side of the road, Louisiana State Police Troop I Spokesman Stephen Hammons said.

His vehicle subsequently flipped, and Turpin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected, according to the crash report. The crash occurred at approximately 8:55 a.m.

Turpin was transported to Opelousas General in critical condition but was pronounced dead upon arrival, Hammons said.

The Troop I spokesman said toxicology samples were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

In other local police news, Juan Torres Jr., 22, of Keith Street in Morgan City was arrested Sunday at 1:35 a.m. at East Gate Shopping Center and charged with simple burglary and resisting an officer.

Morgan City Police officers were dispatched to a burglary alarm activation at Mel-Star Mobil Mart after another officer had seen a suspicious subject, later identified as Torres, running across U.S. 90 into the Eastgate Shopping Center area, Chief Marc Folse said.

Folse said officers apprehended Torres, who was intoxicated and resisted officers. He was wearing clothing matching the description of a suspect who had burglarized the gas station/convenience store, the chief said.

Torres admitted at the Morgan City Police Department that he had broken the glass of the front door at Mel-Star and attempted to enter the store to steal items but was scared off by the audible alarm, Folse said.

He remained in the City Jail this morning with no bond set.

Obed Juarez-Pacheco, 23, of Cut Off was arrested Saturday at 11:48 a.m. and charged with speeding 91 mph in a 70 mph zone, no driver’s license, fraudulent use of a driver’s license or ID card and operating a motor vehicle without lawful presence in the United States.

Juarez-Pacheco was arrested on Brashear Avenue near the U.S. Hwy. 90 downramp after he was clocked on police radar traveling 91 mph.

Juarez-Pacheco produced a fake Louisiana ID card, and through further investigation, authorities learned he was in the country illegally and had no driver’s license, Folse said.

He remained in the City Jail this morning with no bond set.

Alicia R. Kelly, 26, of Orange Street in Morgan City was arrested Saturday at 2:08 p.m. and charged with shoplifting following an incident at Cannata’s Food World.

Store personnel had detained Kelly after she was caught at the checkout counter placing items that had not been paid for in bags with items she had paid for, Folse said. The items were valued at $310, the chief said.

She later was released from the City Jail on a $481 bond.
