No. 17 Morgan City may be playing No. 16 Ursuline in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs in New Orleans today, but MCHS coach Kelly Jo Aucoin has Assumption on the mind in her preparation.
Assumption, Aucoin said, is similar to what the Lady Tigers will face when they square off with Ursuline today at 5 p.m. in New Orleans.
“(They have) good pitching,” Aucoin said of Ursuline. “The hitters are going to hit.”
Aucoin said from looking for information on Ursuline, she has learned they have one or two big hitters the Lady Tigers will have to be wary of.
On the mound, Aucoin said Ursuline’s pitching “is nothing that we haven’t seen this year.”
The Lady Tigers enter today’s matchup on a two-game winning streak, which was set in motion by a 3-2 nine-inning victory against Assumption at home before routing Patterson, 16-0, in their regular season finale.
Aucoin said tight ball games like the Assumption game, where pitching and defense are solid, are games the Lady Tigers have faced in past post-season outings and is something she and her team is preparing for the possibility of this year.
However, in looking at that Assumption game, Aucoin said one thing her squad needs to adjust earlier is its hitting.
Morgan City enters the playoffs with an 18-12 overall mark and a 5-3 district record.
Ursuline is 14-13 overall and was 7-1 in District 10-4A.
The squad faced familiar opponents this year in H.L. Bourgeois and Central Catholic and both came away with victories in those matchups.
