Mayor Ricky Fontinot said he called the meeting to make sure the entire council is in agreement to develop proposals specifying the price of selling or leasing the facility.
He did not say why the discussion was closed to public attendance.
He also said the council will make sure that any company that leases or buys the hospital, nursing home, cancer center and psychiatric treatment center not only keeps them open, “but builds on their improvements.”
“This process is lengthy,” Fontenot said about the legal steps needed to successfully sell or lease the facility “at a fair market value.”
That process includes a referendum in which Mamou residents will vote on the issue. That vote will probably take place later this year, the mayor said, either during the November elections or during a special election.
Mayor Fontenot said, “The hospital was purchased by a vote of the people,” of Mamou and, as a public asset, can only be sold or leased with the public’s permission.
Three companies have expressed interest in either buying or leasing the medical facility. One of those companies has made an offer, but has asked for that offer not to be disclosed.
