Man allegedly confesses to 1994 Mamou rape

MAMOU – A rape which happened here 17 years ago has allegedly been confessed to by an Opelousas man.

According to Det. Marie Pottery, Lawrence W. LaFleur, 49, is in the town jail and has confessed to the rape at a laundromat years ago.

He was snared when a crime lab matched his DNA sample, taken in another matter, with DNA frm the 1994 case.

Potter said police have notified the victim, who now lives in Terrytown in Jefferson Parish.

LaFleur was arrested Friday night.
