A Morgan City man was booked Tuesday afternoon for the attempted murder of his probation officer.

Derrick W. Hayes, 37, of Federal Avenue in Morgan City was arrested at 2:24 p.m. after his probation officer attempted to serve paperwork that would have released Hayes from supervision.

Morgan City police officers responded to a 911 call of an officer requesting backup at Hayes’ residence in the 200 block of Federal Avenue where they found the injured state agent by his vehicle. Hayes was standing in the street yelling and threatening both the agent and arriving officers, MCPD Chief Marc Folse said.

Arriving officers, along with the injured agent, attempted to take Hayes into custody, which he violently resisted before being subdued. Investigating officers learned that when the agent arrived, he encountered a group of people in the yard of the residence along with Hayes. As the agent went to speak with him, he began beating the agent.

The agent was injured and attempted to get into his vehicle while being beaten so he could stop the attack and create distance from the suspect to call for help, but Hayes jumped into the window, grabbed the steering wheel and tried to steer the agent’s vehicle into another vehicle almost causing a crash, Folse said.

The agent was transported to a local hospital where he was diagnosed as having facial lacerations, facial fractures and dental damage.

Hayes was charged with attempted second degree murder of a police officer, battery of a police officer requiring medical treatment, resisting an officer, criminal trespass and disturbing the peace. He was booked into the city jail where he remained this morning with no bond set.
