LAFAYETTE – Acadiana veterans of the Vietnam War are invited to a free "welcome home" celebration.

According to The Daily Advertiser, the 10 a.m. March 31 at the Comeaux Recreation Center will have food and live music.

The U.S. Senate adopted a resolution about a year ago declaring March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. March 30, 1973, was the day U.S. combat troops withdrew from South Vietnam.

Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese in April 1975.

Soldiers came home from Vietnam to protesters calling them losers and baby-killers, among other things, though the number of such was fewer in this area than in other parts of the country.

Vietnam Veterans of America, Acadiana Chapter No. 141, is organizing the event.
