BATCHELOR — A Marksville man was killed in a crash involving three vehicles on La. 1 at La. 972 in Pointe Coupee Parish, according to State Police.

Nicky Voinche, 56, Marksville, was pronounced dead of injuries at Pointe Coupee General Hospitale.

The accident occurred when Joseph Capps, 35, of New Roads, was northbound in a 2007 Toyota pickup on La. 1, south of La. 972, in Northern Pointe Coupee Parish at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Capps apparently swerved to avoid rear-ending a 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by Brian Major, 54, of Jarreau, but Capps sideswiped Major’s truck and then collided head-on with Voinche’s approaching 2007 Chevrolet pickup, Graham said.

Voinche was not wearing a seat belt at the time, Graham said.

Capps, who also was not using a seat belt, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Jarreau, the only driver involved who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured, Graham said.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol as a factor in the crash but have submitted blood samples from Voinche and Capps for analysis, Graham said.

Major voluntarily submitted a breath sample, which showed no detectable alcohol in his system.

Capps was booked on one count each of negligent homicide, careless operation, driving left of center, no seat belt and driving under suspension, Graham said.
