Choate, who lives in Pecan Island, is a celebrity thanks to the TV show “Swamp People.”
Being a celebrity comes with the good and bad. There are no photographers standing on her front lawn near Freshwater City ready to take a picture of her every move. It is not that bad. But there are times when she walks into a local grocery store and people recognize her and ask for an autograph or to take a photo with her.
“My life has changed dramatically,” said Liz. “People recognize me where ever I go. It is actually fun to talk to the children because they get a kick out of it. They enjoy the show so much. I have a blast doing it.”
Liz said there have been times when she walked into a small grocery store in Louisiana and heard the words, “That is Mrs. Liz on Swamp People.”
“I am fine with it (being a celebrity),” she said. “At first I was kind of skeptical because I was not used of it. But I am used to it now.”
Choate just completed her first season as a female alligator hunter on Swamp People, which is shown on the History Channel.
She is Troy “Chot’em, Chot’em” Landry’s alligator shooter this season. The two harvest alligators and when one is caught on the fishing line, it is Liz’s job to shoot it in the head while the gator is still in the water. She also helps Troy pull the alligator out of the water after it is dead.
The good news is that Liz will be back for another season, though but not as Troy’s shooter. Liz did not want to say what her new role will be next season on Swamp People. The show averages 3.9 million viewers on its Thursday night time slot.
Liz, 41, and her husband Justin Choate, who is from Pecan Island, were in Erath Sunday for the Fourth of July Festival. Liz had a booth and was meeting and greeting people in the Erath park. She was signing autographs and taking photos with anyone who wanted to take a photo with her.
The two were also promoting Liz’s tee-shirts, hats and bumper stickers.
“It is going good,” she said. “It is crazy. Swamp People is all around the world.”
Liz’s schedule is busy because of her new fame. She and her husband will be attending a waterfowl exhibition in Houston. Liz has appearances throughout March of next year.
Liz was born and raised in Pierre Part near Morgan City.
She has hunted alligators with her father Charles Dupre since she was 12, was the first name people in the community gave them.
Every alligator season Liz hunts 2,900 acres near Houma.
Despite all of the fame, Liz said she is still the same person she was before the show. “I told you before the show aired, I am a simple person, and I am still a simple person.”
