The Palmetto Trail through 2.5 miles of the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge is again open. Closed during hunting season over the winter months, the trail is located on Janet E. Road, just off the U.S. 90 frontage road east of Franklin. The trail was a project of the Friends of the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge group. It passes through a variety of natural environs unique to coastal Louisiana and has become a favorite area for potential wildlife viewing. Plans are in the works to add informative signs and duck boxes to further enhance the hike experience. For more information, see the group’s Facebook page or email btrfriends@yahoo.com.
