Central Catholic led 23-20 at halftime but a 17-9 third quarter put the Lumberjacks in front and they were able to hold on for the win.
“It was a great game to start the season off with,’ PHS coach Ryan Taylor said. “It had a playoff like atmosphere. Both crowds were into the game. You had great athletes from both teams making plays.”
Tremaine Lightfoot led the ‘Jacks with 11 points and was a force on the boards; Trevon Stewart and Deondre Skinner had 10 points each; Gina Hall had seven; Denzel Johnson had six and Dylan Sanders had four.
Central Catholic’s dynamic duo of Dontrell Brown and Lloyd Grogan scored 13 points each; Josh Singleton had eight; Tyler Hoffpauir had seven and Nick Case had three.
Both schools likely wish they were both still in the football playoffs so the game wasn’t as crisp as the rematch will be on Jan. 13 at the Matchbox.
“I am happy to get the win but more importantly I am excited about watching my team play,” Taylor said. “My kids made plays when the opportunity presented itself. We just have to continue to get better and get our basketball legs under us.”
Patterson will continue tournament play today at 6:30 p.m. against Berwick and the Eagles will return on Saturday to face Berwick at 10 a.m. and Jeanerette at 1 p.m.
The Lumberjacks last game of the tournament is Saturday against Grand Isle at 11:30 a.m
Panthers’ late rally falls short
Berwick boys’ basketball team nearly picked up its first win of the season on Thursday against Jeanerette, but it wasn’t meant to be with the Tigers winning 55-50.
Jeanerette (1-3) held off a hard charge from the Panthers with a 15-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Berwick started off slow, trailing 17-6 after a quarter, which came back to haunt them in the second half.
“Another slow start and way too many turnovers hurt us again,” BHS coach John Menard said. “We did a good job of fighting back and had a chance at the end of the game.”
BHS had two scorers in double digits with Nick Osburn scoring a team-high 13 points and Palmer Cox added 11. Chaz Russo scored eight points, Devin Tabor had seven, Nick Canty had five points, Joe Francis had four, and Nathan Baum-gartner had two.
Berwick (0-5) was winless last season, but they’ve been reenergized under new coach John Menard and look like a much better team with the recently elusive wins looking more and more likely by the game.
“This was a game I feel we should have won,” Menard said. “Not taking anything away from Jeanerette, we just had our chances at the end and did not take advantage of our opportunities.”
Berwick will face Patterson tonight at 6:30 p.m. and they will face Central Catholic at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Grand Isle at 2:30 p.m. in the last game of the tournament.
MCHS downs Franklin in Tourney on the Teche
Morgan City boys’ basketball team took on Franklin (0-3) in the first game of the Tourney on the Teche at Centerville High School.
The Tigers led 21-6 after a quarter and didn’t look back with a comfortable lead throughout the game.
Jalen Johnson saw his first minutes of the season and scored 12 points; Jaylen Jones led the team with 17 points; Tyrin Watts had 12 rebounds and nine points; Carl Singleton had five points; Auinndus Humphrey had four points; Derrick Walker had three points; Malcolm Watkins had two points; and Eric Walker added one point.
Morgan City improved to 2-2 with the win and will face Loreauville at 6:30 p.m. today and close out the tournament on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Centerville.
