A little more than 1,000 homes lost power during Monday's brief, but intense, thunderstorm.

Cleco Public Information Officer Robyn Cooper said two outages occurred within 10 minutes of each other.

The first, affecting 642 customers in the area of Canal Road and Delmar Avenue in Bayou Vista, occurred at 2:29 p.m. and was over by 2:58 p.m.

A breaker opened, as it is designed to do should there be a problem with the system, but Cleco personnel could not find a cause for the interruption. Workers re-energized the equipment and it held, Cooper said, accounting for the short length of the outage.

In Patterson, around 400 customers in the vicinity of Park and Catherine streets lost power at 2:18 p.m.

Roughly 350 of them had power restored after about one hour as workers rerouted power flow. The remaining customers were without power until 5:23 p.m.

The outage was caused by five downed spans of wire. A span is the length from pole to pole, Cooper said.
