Patterson held the upperhand against Pope John Paul II, 34-7, in action at the LHSAA Coaches Clinic at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie on Friday.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association held the event to allow referees practice time for the upcoming season. Even though it was not a scrimmage, score was kept during the event, PHS coach Tommy Minton said.

Minton said his squad faced game-like situations in the event, in which the teams squared off in full pads for two 20-minute halves. One difference, though, was that in lieu of kickoffs, teams started offensive drives at their own 30-yard line.

Minton said his squad was able to get some good work out of the scrimmage, and it allowed the PHS coaching staff to see what they needed to work on.

Patterson was one of multiple teams to participate in the event.

The Lumberjacks will return to action Thursday when they travel to face Plaquemine in a 5:30 p.m. scrimmage.

The ’Jacks will participate in the Morgan City Jamboree on Aug. 24 against Central Catholic before opening the regular season on the road on Aug. 31 against Crowley.
