Patterson man faces drug charge

Morgan City Assistant Police Chief Glenn Blanco reported the following arrests:

—Krystal Meranta, 23, of Clark Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:16 p.m. Thursday, on a warrant for probation violation. Meranta was taken to jail and held with bail set at $500.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported the following arrests:

—James August Smith, 37, of Darlene Street in Patterson, was arrested at 11:52 a.m. Thursday for improper lane usage, driving under suspension, resisting an officer by giving false information, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A deputy observed trash flying out of the back of a pickup truck traveling on U.S. 90 in the Franklin area and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with Smith, the driver of the vehicle, the deputy learned that he identified himself using a fake name and that his driver’s license was suspended. After receiving consent to search the vehicle, the deputy located a glass pipe, the report stated. Smith was taken to the parish jail and held. He was later released on a $3,750 bail.

—Sheree Martin, 30, of Cremo Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 1:58 p.m. Thursday for theft. A deputy patrolling the Bayou Vista area responded to a complaint of a shoplifter at Walmart in Bayou Vista.

Upon arrival, the deputy learned from store security that Martin was observed placing items in a backpack and then leaving the store without paying for the items, the report stated. Martin was released on a summons to appear in court April 17.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
