Central Catholic may have earned a victory in the first of three matchups with Patterson at the CCHS 7-on-7 Tournament Saturday, but Patterson had the last laugh.
After Central Catholic opened tournament play with a 16-15 victory against the neighboring Lumberjacks in both teams’ tournament opener on Saturday morning, Patterson soundly defeated CCHS in the teams’ second and third matchups, a 29-5 victory in bracket play and again in the championship game, 22-3, after CCHS survived the loser’s bracket to reach the finals.
The loss to Central Catholic was Patterson’s only one in the tournament, as the Lumberjacks finished 7-1.
“I thought the kids played well,” PHS coach Tommy Minton said. “We got off to a slow start in that first game, but after that, we started executing better. I thought it was good competition. Everybody competed well and got better from it.”
Other than its first round defeat, no team got closer than 22 points against the ’Jacks in pool play. The locals defeated South Lafourche, 46-3, shut out St. Edmund, 56-0, and concluded pool play with a 34-12 victory against Peabody.
Minus the two blowout victories against CCHS in bracket play, things were closer for the ’Jacks the rest of the way as they edged E.D. White, 25-22, and Franklin, 27-20.
CCHS finished the tournament with a 6-3 record, with its other loss coming to E.D. White, 17-16, in pool play.
“I thought we did well for not playing 7-on-7 all summer,” CCHS coach David Fuhrer said, adding that he saw good things from his players both on offense and defense.
After defeating Patterson in its opener, CCHS defeated St. Edmund, 28-12, and South Lafourche, 28-19, before falling to E.D. White, 17-16.
In bracket play, Central Catholic also routed Catholic-Pointe Coupee, 39-4; South Lafourche, 34-8; and Franklin, 33-12.
Overall, Fuhrer said he thought the tournament went on well. He thanked all of the sponsors for their assistance with this year’s tournament as well as all the parents and volunteers who helped out.
Patterson, which has competed in multiple 7-on-7 scrimmages and tournaments this year, will wrap up its summer when it competes in an eight-team event at Thibodaux High on Thursday.
Both CCHS and Patterson will start fall practice on July 30.
