Patterson resident Isaac White recently excelled at the International Presentation of Performers, or iPOP, Convention, held in January in Los Angeles.

The 14-year-old brought home four trophies and two honorable mention awards from the event, which brings together trained performers and models to perform in front of choreographers and show producers and to develop networking skills that will benefit them in the future.

“I just knew God was going to put his hand over me, and I was going to do my best,” White said.

His father, Grey White, said his son took his acting abilities to another level at the event.

“Professional,” G. White said. “He was professional.”

White, who attends John Robert Powers Academy in New Orleans, a school where acting, modeling, singing, dancing and other skills are taught, was one of 22 students chosen by school officials to attend the iPOP! Convention in Los Angeles on Jan. 3-8.

The convention brings together students who attend schools, like John Robert Powers, from all over the country as well as Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

White won a contest for TV commercials and was first runner-up for Singer of the Year, Actor of the Year and in the Scenes competition.

He also received honorable mention in modeling and monologue competitions.

In all, White’s school won more than 100 awards and more than 20 students participated in competitions at the event in acting, modeling, singing and dancing.

Because of his success in the singing competition, White was chosen to sing in front of thousands of people at a showcase held during the event.

During the event, G. White said his son competed against hundreds of students and received 51 callbacks from agents. He estimated that thousands attended the convention.

“That’s crazy,” he said of the success.

At the moment, White said the family is deciding what agent to choose to help his son pursue his signing and acting career.

The event was the first major competition that White has attended.

Using his singing talents, White previously won first place in a competition against college students in a talent show at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, his father said.

The Patterson High School freshman has been attending classes every Saturday for six months at the John Robert Powers Academy.

White enjoys singing gospel and rhythm and blues and he puts his vocal talents to use at multiple churches in the tri-parish area.

G. White thanked the community for their donations to help fund his son’s trip to Los Angeles.

“I want the community to see exactly what he did,” G. White said.

In addition to his acting and vocal talents, White is a percussionist in the PHS band and a member of the school’s student council. He also is learning to play the keyboard.
