HESSMER – A man was killed after being hit by a car while walking across Highway 115.

He was apparently checking his mailbox on the other side of the street from his home, something neighbors said he did routinely after 6:30 at night.

The accident occurred across from Detel on the north side of the village of Hessmer Saturday night.

The victim has been identified as Wilbert J. Ducote, 76.

Ducote was walking across La. Highway 115 when he was struck by a car driven by Mary F. Duplantis, 68, of Lake Charles, state police said.

Troopers responded to the crash around 6:40 p.m. on La. 115 north of La. 114.

Duplantis was driving a 2005 Buick Rainier north on La. 115 when Ducote walked into the northbound lane.

Duplantis was wearing her seat belt and was not injured.

Ducote was wearing black shoes, black pants and a black shirt.
