Louisiana Poet Laureate Julie Kane, Ph.D., performed at the Patterson Area Civic Center on April 15 for the Poetry by Candlelight Fundraiser hosted by Hoodstock. The Northwestern University associate professor was one of several featured poets and spoken word artists at the event.

Kane was appointed as Poet Laureate for the state in May 2011. A poet laureate is a poet officially appointed by a government and is often expected to compose poems.

She also received the key to the City of Patterson during the local event. Patterson Mayor Rodney Grogan made the presentation.

Hoodstock is a grassroots organization comprised of young professionals and residents who believe in giving back to their community.

At Hoodstock’s core is a committee of young professionals and residents that believe each resident is vested, whether sentimentally or by real estate, in the community in which they live therefore they have “stock” in their neighborhood.

Hoodstock 2012 will be an event geared towards reviving core values necessary amongst residents of underprivileged and lower income communities. It’s purpose is to not only bridge the gap between old and young, but cross color lines and economics by providing a family-oriented, educational and fun-filled day for adults and children.

In 2011, the Hoodstock committee welcomed musical artists, public official candidates and businesses in a community-wide social action and educational benefit.
