EUNICE – A Maringouin man skipped the traditional blackeye peas and cabbage and went straight to dessert on New Years Day, police allege.

iA routine traffic stop turned into much more New Year’s Day when a Maringouin man was tasered after allegedly attempting to flee Eunice Police with drugs in his mouth.

According to Eunice Police, an officer observed a Chevrolet Suburban drive through a stop sign on South 2nd Street Sunday afternoon.

The vehicle reportedly drove for two blocks before stopping for police.

Police said the driver seemed very nervous while talking to the officer and gave discrepancies in his story.

The driver then attempted to climb out the vehicle window to escape, according to police.

The driver fought with police, and it took three officers to bring him under control, police said.

According to the police radio logs, a taser was deployed twice and pepper spray used before the man yielded to police.

Marijuana was discovered in the vehicle, and during a search, inside and around the suspect’s mouth.

Kevin Jerell Mims, 10905 Bayou Rd., Maringouin, was charged with stop sign violation, possession of Schedule I narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting and officer, possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in a drug-free zone and obstruction of justice.

Police said the last charge stems from Mims allegedly attempting to eat the evidence.

Police said Mims has prior arrests for narcotics and weapons charges, and is currently on probation with the Louisiana Department of Corrections for possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
