Patrice Johnson of Prairieville, who served her country in the military and helps her community through several Louisiana-based charitable organizations especially this holiday season, has won the national Rewrite Your Day contest.

She is having her wedding day, which was ruined by a debilitating migraine, re-created.

Celebrity wedding planner, Mindy Weiss, will be in Baton Rouge to re-create special moments of Johnson’s wedding day that Johnson was unable to enjoy because a chronic migraine left her unable to read her personal vows, dance with her new husband or mingle with her guests at the reception.

Her special day will be held Wednesday at Mount Hope Plantation in Baton Rouge.

Johnson grew up in a low-income neighborhood near Baton Rouge and was faced with many challenges, but she was committed to staying on the right path.

She joined the Louisiana National Guard to give back to her country, and she started to work with the volunteer-run organization, the Cinderella Project, where she mentors African American girls in the community.

Johnson started to develop migraines more than a decade ago, but continued to plug through life’s events — always giving back to her family and community — even if that meant she was completely debilitated due to the pain. Her symptoms typically include visual disturbances, nausea and/or vomiting and sensitivity to noise and light.

On one of the most important days of her life, her wedding day, she woke up with a migraine that continued to worsen throughout the day. By the time of the ceremony, she rushed through her personal vows because the migraine made it uncomfortable to read. She could barely move during her first dance due to dizziness, and even took a nap in her car during the reception to try and get some relief.

Many people living with chronic migraine have missed out on special moments in their life.

In order to raise awareness of the disabling symptoms and burden of chronic migraine, Allergan, the National Headache Foundation and HealthyWomen partnered on the Rewrite Your Day campaign.

As part of Rewrite Your Day, 15 people living with chronic migraine will have the opportunity to win a special moment in their life lost to the condition “rewritten” by Mindy Weiss — symbolizing the 15 or more headache days a month experienced by people with chronic migraine.

Based on her personal story of missing out on key parts of her own wedding day, Johnson is the first winner to have her missed moment re-created as part of the campaign.
