Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the Bertrand-Vinning Pump Station, originally named the Plantation Inn Pump Station, in Bayou Vista Wednesday. Construction of the new storm water drainage pump station, which will replace the existing station that services the Bayou Vista community, is being funded by $1.9 million in state capital outlay funds and a local match. The new station will have flow rate capacity that exceeds 160,000 gallons per minute. The storm water will discharge over a levee system by way of steel pipes into a new discharge basin that empties into the existing Opperman Canal. The existing 55-year-old pump station will be demolished upon completion and operation of the new station. The project is scheduled to be completed in September 2013 and is owned by St. Mary Gravity Sub-Drainage District 1.
