MAURICE — A two-vehicle crash, including a Maurice Police Department cruiser, Thursday afternoon claimed one life and left two others with injuries.

The crash occurred just after noon on U.S. Hwy. 167 (Maurice Avenue) near the village’s main stretch. Stephen Hammons with the Louisiana State Police did not release the identities of those involved in the crash.

Hammons said the accident occurred as the Maurice officer traveled north on Hwy. 167 with his lights and siren activated.

“The officer was in the left lane when he was approaching the intersection,” Hammons said. “A driver of the other vehicle, a gold Mercury, pulled out in front of the officer and the officer struck the driver’s side of that Mercury.”

The driver of the Mercury died as a result. Paramedics transported a passenger in that vehicle to a local hospital with injuries.

“As of right now we believe those injuries to be moderate and possibly critical,” Hammons said more than an hour after the crash.

Hammons reported the officer’s injuries to be minor to moderate.

The crash remains under investigation.

“There are still a lot of details we are working to establish.”
