The parade begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Senior High School and travels down Main Street to the St. Mary Parish Courthouse then returns to FSHS. This year’s theme is “Fired Up and Ready to Go.”
Rack is the daughter of Willie and Pearl Barnes Rack. “I am honored to be selected as the grand marshal of the Krewe of Head Start,” Rack said. “As a former Head Start student, it makes me feel good to represent the children of Head Start and St. Mary Parish.”
St. Mary CAA Chief Executive Officer Almetra J. Franklin said, “What better way to begin the 2013 recruitment of three-to-five year olds than having a past Head Start student leading the parade.”
During her career at FSHS, Rack was a member of the National Honor Society, homecoming and prom queen and also co-captain of the girls’ basketball team. She received many basketball awards, including All District MVP for four consecutive years, All-State MVP in three of her four years playing and the prestigious Louisiana’s Miss Basketball. She then went on to attend Mississippi State University on a basketball scholarship where her career blossomed. Solid play allowed Rack to earn numerous awards for her stellar SEC performances. She twice was awarded the Gillom Trophy as Mississippi’s top college player, the first player to do so in back to back seasons.
Alexis was drafted by the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA in 2010. She has also played professional basketball in Turkey, Poland and Germany. She continues to be an inspiration in her community as she has personally worked with many aspiring basketball players in St. Mary Parish, and has conducted basketball clinics at both J. A. Hernandez, and Franklin Junior High.
“The community of Franklin and St. Mary parish have been extremely supportive of my career and always encouraged me during high school and college,” Rack said. “I really want to thank them for all the love they’ve shown.”
