ALEXANDRIA – The Rapides Parish School Board, without a superintendent since August has voted to take applications for the post until May.

Gary Jones left on Sept. 1 to take a state job after the board voted in May of this year not to renew his contract.

The board was scheduled to select 10 semifinalists from 18 applications for the position at a special meeting Tuesday night, but decided to keep the process open until May 15, 2013.

Board members discussed the list of candidates in secret, then voted to extend the search and declining to talk about the reasons or reveal the candidates’ names.

The contention is the names are not public record because they have not been officially given by a search firm to the board, only apparently discussed at lengthy in a closed-door pow-wow.
