MORGAN CITY, la. — Work to repair the Cajun Coast Welcome Center is on schedule and expected to be completed by July.

In January, the Cajun Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau commission completed the settlement of the foundation failure and signed a contract with Expert House Movers Inc. to lift the building, fix the foundation and repair the building.

“They’ve completed selective demolition. They’ve taken all of the brick work off the fireplace, and they’ve pretty much taken out all of the sheet rock on the bottom floor,” said Cajun Coast Executive Director Carrie Stansbury.

Cajun Coast held a series of special meetings to discuss legal issues concerning the sinking and subsequent rebuilding of the center. The building sank in the ground in June about a month before it was scheduled to be completed.

“What they are waiting on now is, they are cutting holes in the floor to prepare to drive the pilings,” Stansbury said. The contractor, EHM, is also inserting sheet pilings necessary for dewatering, she said.

Stansbury described what the dewatering process entails. “They’re going to make a dike around the building and take all the water out from under the building … so they can bring their equipment.”

After the dewatering process is complete, EHM will bring equipment in and start driving the pilings, Stansbury said.
