MORGAN CITY — Last week’s heavy rains caused massive flooding at the Port of Morgan City office building, prompting at least one board member to question whether the parking lots recently added had anything to do with the facility.

“Twenty years and we’ve never flooded here. Now we have all this cement around us. Did we step in it?” Board Chairman Jerry Gauthier asked advisors during Monday’s board meeting.

Inches of water were blown into the building in the meeting room, reception area and Coast Guard area, among other places.

Gulf South Engineers representative Clay Braud said the downspouts in the parking lot will be checked and the entire lot was constructed sloping away from the building, an essential turtleback, to avoid such problems.

Carpet in the meeting room was stripped and dehumidifiers and fans have been brought in to dry out walls. The damage is covered by insurance with a $1,000 deductible.
