The more than 420 members attending were treated to a dinner of fried catfish, white beans over rice, and a salad.
Bread was served to all in a matter of minutes with area political candidates serving as waiters and waitresses.
St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin and Parish Councilman Kevin Voisin sponsored the meal that was prepared by Sterling Fryou, Mac McNemar and a host of helpers.
Naquin and Voisin spoke to ask for support in the Oct. 22 election.
Shannon Guillory of Walgreens informed that the time to change prescription drug coverage started on Oct. 15.
St. Mary AARP will hold its election of officers and board members Nov. 7 from 4-7 p.m. at the senior citizens center prior to the November AARP meeting. State of Louisiana voting machines will be used.
Returning to office without opposition are President Paul Vella, Vice President Curtis Leonard, Treasurer Ann Lombardo and Corresponding Secretary Joe Pizzuto.
The Nov. 7 election will feature those running for recording secretary and board member.
Jane Aucoin and Susan Songe are running for recording secretary.
Board member incumbents seeking re-election are Myrt McNemar, Jerry Fabre, Gene Gaudet, Alicia Robicheaux, Pat Fryer, Linda Darce and Linda Eues.
Also seeking election to the board are Peggy Verret, Carol Francis, Judy Giroir and Kathy Miller.
A total of eight board member will be elected.
Election winners will be announced at the Nov. 7 meeting. All unopposed and elected officers and board members will be installed into office at the Dec. 5 meeting. Helen Ross will oversee the installation.
AARP officers and board members serve a two-year term, ending December 2013.
Many members renewed their St. Mary AARP dues at the October meeting.
Renewal and new member dues are $10 per person or $20 for a couple (both spouses must join). After Jan. 31, dues increase by $2 per person.
Dues may be paid at Whitney Bank during business hours or at the St. Mary AARP office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dues will be collected through Jan. 31.
The Nov. 7 meeting will be presided over by Leonard and will feature a chicken and sausage gumbo paid for by Hargrave Funeral Home and prepared by the Fryou-McNemar team plus Alicia Robicheaux and others.
