The public is encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. for the “Call-Out of Teams” and then for the official “Opening Ceremonies,” which begin at 7 p.m.
“Our Relay event this year will be somewhat different from those in the past,” Event Chair Michael Knobloch said. “First, we have changed the venue from outside in the stadium to the adjacent air-conditioned gym in MCJHS. Because of the heat, humidity and recent late-afternoon rains, our event committee decided to bring it inside. We are thankful to MCJHS Principal Kenneth Holmes for allowing us to have our event in the air-conditioned gym of his school. We think that this will make it easier for our cancer survivors to enjoy ‘their night!’ Also, we are incorporating a few new things to make the event special and unique.”
In addition to being inside, the Relay Event will have a number of games and activities, as well as live entertainment.
“Participating in various games and races provide our event attendees and team members an opportunity to have fun while raising money for a great cause. There will be hula-hoop contests, sack races, musically-themed laps such as the ’70s, ’80s, Beatles, etc.,” Activities Chair Leah Begley said.
Begley added that the event will have a deejay providing music from 5-8 p.m. The “Hott Dawgs” will provide live entertainment beginning at 8 p.m.
One of the most emotional aspects of a Relay event is the luminaria ceremony, which will occur at 9 p.m. During this time, the gym will be darkened and the only light that will be seen is that emitted from luminaria bags placed on the gym floor.
This year’s luminaria ceremony will incorporate a few new aspects that will enhance the luminaria ceremony. Debby Acosta, event committee member, said, “This is the most touching part of our Relay event. Families attend this ceremony as a way to honor their loved ones and to remember those who are no longer here with us.”
