Morgan City Chief Administrative Officer Lorrie Braus said today the switch is one of a pair that routes energy from the plant to the city’s power grid. In the balancing act that is city power generation, the switch was set too low and when energy demands increased in the heat of the day, the switch could not compensate. It therefore tripped and had to be reset by city crews.
Power was out for about 30 minutes and was restored around 3 p.m.
Braus said the switch is instrumentation at the Joseph J. Cefalu Sr. Municipal Steam Plant, but it is not related to the transformer that had to be replaced after the June 26 explosion. It also is not a component of the two generators that aid the transformer in power generation.
