Berwick High School students and faculty participated in “Tricks for Treats” today. Students were encouraged to dress up and in return brought in two canned goods to be donated to the St. Mary Outreach. Buffy S. Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco of the Morgan City Police Department said, “Trick-or-treating begins at 6 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m., and parents and guardians must accompany kids younger than 12. All trick-or-treaters should be off the street by 8:30 p.m.”
Blanco reminds parents and children that there is safety in numbers.
“Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are lots of people around,” he said. “Dress in a bright costume so others can see them. If you have a dark costume, attach a piece of reflective tape or glow stick. They can also carry a small flashlight.”
Blanco suggests using face paint in lieu of masks so that the child’s vision is not obscured.
“Make any adjustments in the length of the costume to avoid tripping. Ensure your kids only visit the homes that have their lights on and are displaying Halloween decorations,” he said.
“Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s home. They should only get their treats from the porch or carport.”
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said that “it is crucial that you know which houses your children should avoid when trick-or-treating.”
The sheriff said he invited citizens to view the http://www.sheriffalerts.com/la/stmary website to research neighborhoods and addresses and register to receive e-mail notifications on registered sex offenders near those addresses.
“The most beneficial aspect of the address monitoring feature is that once your important addresses and e-mail address have been registered, the system will automatically alert you via e-mail when an offender moves within a specified radius of the registered address,” Hebert said.
“Register any and all addresses where your children spend a lot of time; for example friends, grandparents or babysitter’s addresses,” he said. “Registering for this confidential e-mail alert service allows us to monitor your important addresses for you, thereby keeping you up to date of newly registered offenders and making it unnecessary for you to have to check these addresses daily or even weekly.”
Hebert said that sex offenders “are not supposed to have their front porch lights on, nor are they supposed to answer the door.”
Chief James Richard of the Berwick Police Department said that his department will have extra patrols on duty tonight during trick-or-treat times, and said that parents should check their children’s candy before it is consumed.
Blanco said that his department will also have extra patrols on duty.
