St. Mary Parish taxpayers showered local governments with $37 million in sales tax receipts in 2011, a $900,000 increase over 2010 and up $2.5 million over 2009.

While the bounty left local governments awash in greenbacks on the year, sales taxes did exhibit a slight downward trend as the year closed.

Tax collections for the month of December were $2.9 million, down slightly from $3.1 million collected in 2010. Taxes collected by examinations in December were $404,000 compared to $163,000 in December 2010.

Total distributions for the year to local governments included the St. Mary Parish school board, $17 million; St. Mary Parish Council, $5.7 million; City of Morgan City, $4.1 million; City of Franklin, $2.6 million; Sheriff’s Office, $2.4 million; City of Patterson, $1.8 million; Town of Berwick, $1.5 million and the Town of Baldwin, $779, 959.
